Council of Europe human rights commissioner Alvaro Gil-Robles drew the Armenian leadership’s attention to “the issue of repeal of death penalty utterly important for the CE.” At today’s meeting with Armenian foreign minister Vardan Oskanian in Yerevan Gil-Robles noted the progress registered in Armenia in the human rights sphere, as well as in fulfilling the commitments to the Council of Europe. In the course of the meeting the parties addressed the urgent problems of the South Caucasus, in particular, the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement, exacerbation of the Russian-Georgian relations and its possible impact on the security and stability in the region as a whole.
