A meeting of protest against withdrawal of 62-nd Russian military base from Samtskhe-Javakhetia was held in Akhalkalaki September 12. In the words of one of the action initiators, “Virk” party co-chair David Rstakian, some 5 thousand people were present at the meeting and adopted a corresponding message addressed to the Presidents of the Russian Federation, Georgia and Armenia. The withdrawal of the Russian military base will create social and economic problems in the region, David Rstakian considers. Moreover, in his words, there is a danger that Turkish military will take the place of the Russian, which will cause disturbance among the residents of the region mostly inhabited by Armenians. Let us note that Georgia suggests closing the military base in Akhalkalaki within 3 years, and Russia – within 11.
