AZERBAIJAN HARSHLY CRITICIZED AT PACE MONITORING COMMISSION SESSION

Azeri authorities were criticized at the session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe monitoring commission for failure to carry out the commitments given by them on being accepted into the organization. The participants of the session, at which the PACE monitoring commission report on Azerbaijan was heard, expressed extremely negative opinions on the political prisoners and human rights record of the country. The commission report also disapproved of the process and results of the referendum on constitutional reforms held in Azerbaijan August 24. Reprimands on facts of limiting freedom of speech in Azerbaijan were also issued. It was also noted at the session that although a number of important laws had been passed in the country, in fact they were not put into practice.
