Kazakh Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi has ruled out the possibility of sending CSTO forces to Luhansk and Donetsk, which Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized as independent republics on Monday, February 21.
"No, this is impossible, because the CSTO charter strictly limits the use of military and peacekeeping forces. They can only be used in the CSTO space," Tleuberdi told reporters on Tuesday, Interfax reports.
He reminded that CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas earlier commented on the scenario for the deployment of CSTO peacekeepers in the Donbass and described it as a "hypothetical question."
“It is practically impossible,” Tleuberdi said, maintaining that UN resolution and mandate from the UN Security Council are needed for such a move. He added, however, that the UN has its own peacekeeping forces.
