TURKEY CAPABLE OF PLAYING RATHER CONSTRUCTIVE ROLE IN KARABAKH CONFLICT SETTLEMENT, ARMENIAN FOREIGN MINISTER CONSIDERS

Turkey is a powerful actor in the region and it is capable of playing a rather constructive role in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, Armenian foreign minister Vardan Oskanian stated after the meeting with his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem in Istanbul. As reported by “Arminfo” agency, Oskanian noted that official Ankara’s position regarding the processes taking place in the South Caucasus region had undergone notable changes within last year. Turkey does not wish to take the stand of a mediator any more, but intends to come out as a state capable of discussing the problems of creating favorable atmosphere in the region with Armenia and Azerbaijan. In the opinion of the Armenian foreign ministry head, the key question in this regard is Turkey’s tendency to playing a positive role in the solution of the Karabakh problem, and it has to approach it more steadily, and meetings like that taken place in Reykjavik in spring show that Turkey is ready to it. Continuing the topic the Armenian minister emphasized that the package deal settlement is the point. Last year the parties were close to signing a document on the settlement, but new conditions were laid down by Azerbaijan and the process was frozen. The arrangements agreed upon in Paris and Key West represent perfect preconditions for settling the Karabakh conflict peacefully, Oskanian noted.
