Czech envoy join Borrell’s call for unblocking Karabakh

Czech Ambassador to Armenia Petr Piruncik has joined a call from EU High Representative Josep Borrell on opening the Lachin Corridor connecting Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) to Armenia and resuming ICRC’s medical evacuations.

Piruncik cited Borrell’s statement that said that Azerbaijan’s “readiness” to supply goods to Nagorno-Karabakh via Aghdam should be seen as an alternative to the reopening of the corridor.

“The EU also notes that the ICRC activities in the region have been heavily impacted and calls for their full resumption, including medical evacuations and humanitarian supplies,” Piruncik said on Twitter Thursday, July 28.

Since December 12, 2022, the sole road connecting Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia – the Lachin Corridor – has been blocked by Azerbaijan. Baku tightened the blockade on June 15, 2023, banning emergency relief supplies that were carried out by Russian peacekeepers and the International Committee of the Red Cross through the sole road connecting Karabakh to Armenia and the outside world. The move aggravated the shortages of food, medicine and other essential items experienced by the region’s population.
