Armenia: Foreign diplomats to visit border area where humanitarian aid trucks are

Representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in Armenia and international organizations will visit the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the province of Syunik where a large humanitarian cargo sent from Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh has been stationed since July 26.

According to Vardan Sargsyan — a representative of a working group on the management of the humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh – the humanitarian supply reached the village of Kornidzor more than a day ago, but there is no progress.

Armenia earlier sent around 400 tons of humanitarian aid to Nagorno Karabakh amid a complete blockade of the sole road connecting Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia – the Lachin Corridor – by Azerbaijan since December 12, 2022. Baku tightened the blockade on June 15, 2023, banning emergency relief supplies that were carried out by Russian peacekeepers and the International Committee of the Red Cross through the sole road connecting Karabakh to Armenia and the outside world. The move aggravated the shortages of food, medicine and other essential items experienced by the region’s population.

Sargsyan said the international community, in particular, Lithuania, the EU, France, and Denmark have reacted to the situation.

“Despite the statements that the Lachin corridor is open and there are no obstacles to the movement of goods and people in need of medical assistance, the fact remains, and the whole world sees it: the trucks stand still, and the convoy with humanitarian cargo cannot reach the population of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is in a humanitarian crisis,” said Sargsyan.

According to him, Russian peacekeepers deployed in Karabakh have been reached out, and all information regarding the cargo has been conveyed to Azerbaijan so that Baku does not manipulate the situation.
