Yerevan, Washington discuss Armenia-Azerbaijan delimitation

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State (Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs) Joshua Huck met on Tuesday, October 24 to discuss the delimitation between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

During the meeting in Yerevan, Pashinyan said the U.S. efforts in the process of normalization of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations. The PM referred to the forced deportation of more than 100,000 of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh as a result of Azerbaijan's ethnic cleansing policy and the resulting humanitarian situation, emphasizing in this context the importance of international support in solving the existing problems.

The two discussed issues related to the normalization of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, the de-blocking of regional transport infrastructures based on the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, jurisdiction and reciprocity, delimitation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as peace and stability in the region.

The sides exchanged ideas on issues of Armenia-US cooperation agenda.

On September 19, Azerbaijan launched a military offensive against Nagorno-Karabakh, which left hundreds of Armenians killed and thousands of others displaced. On September 20, the authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh agreed to a ceasefire on Azerbaijan’s terms, including the dissolution of the Defense Army. On September 18, President of the Republic of Artsakh Samvel Shahramanyan signed a decree, according to which the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) will cease to exist by January 1, 2024. Over 100,000 displaced residents have already fled Nagorno-Karabakh and reached Armenia.
