Herbst: Armenia pursues new partnerships with U.S., Europe

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is shaping a future in which the United States, the West, and Europe see Armenia as a key partner, said John Herbst, senior director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center.

Introducing Pashinyan at an event, Herbst noted that the Armenian leader has been steering his country since the 2018 Velvet Revolution, a momentous democratic transition for Armenia.

“He has led his nation through turbulent times, including early parliamentary elections in 2021. A journalist by profession, Prime Minister Pashinyan is now writing a new chapter for Armenia and its future—one of peace, normal relations with neighbors, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a future where the U.S., the West, and Europe are interested in working with Armenia,” Herbst stated.

He emphasized that the newly established U.S.-Armenia strategic partnership marks a significant step forward for Armenia’s future and U.S.-Armenia relations. “Congratulations, Prime Minister Pashinyan and Foreign Minister Mirzoyan, on this achievement. This cooperation is clearly in the interest of both Armenia and the United States. With that, I invite Prime Minister Pashinyan to take the stage, after which we will have a discussion,” Herbst concluded.

On February 1, Nikol Pashinyan and his wife, Anna Hakobyan, traveled to the U.S. to attend the 5th annual International Religious Freedom Summit and the National Prayer Breakfast.
