Detained businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan has announced the formation of a new political team, emphasizing an independent approach to Armenia’s political future. In a message from detention, he criticized the current government and called for unity beyond political and social divides.
Karapetyan, who has been in custody for two months, stated that while collaboration with like-minded groups remains possible, his initiative will follow a unique path, rejecting divisive political strategies. He noted that despite ideological disagreements with the ruling government, many professionals within the system have yet to find a path forward.
His message read:
“Dear compatriots,
Our very first rally confirmed the authorities’ greatest fear: our people believe in their strength and will not break under repression. I want to again thank the tens of thousands who have shown civic courage on July 4 and beyond.
I’m also grateful to everyone who supports me. Although my previous statement was widely discussed, unfortunately, some interpretations were far from reality. I believe I made it clear—we will establish a fundamentally new political force.
I deeply respect those political actors who have truly fought against Nikol Pashinyan’s anti-national policies. Still, we have our own vision for Armenia’s future. We will move forward with our new team, open to internal cooperation with allies. We aim to unite people around justice and a greater purpose, rejecting the black-and-white dichotomies and artificial divisions imposed by the current regime that have fractured and weakened our country.
Even within the existing administration, there are genuine professionals who do not share the values of the ruling elite but have yet to find a viable exit strategy.
Our political team is already taking shape.
We will act—our way.”
On June 18, Samvel Karapetyan was detained for two months and transported to the Armavir penitentiary, charged with publicly calling for the usurpation of government powers. Hours earlier, he had issued a statement supporting the Armenian Apostolic Church: “I stand by our Church, our people… Everything will be fine. The people will speak, and they will realize their mistake.”
Shortly after, the process of nationalizing the Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA) began, which has since been approved by the National Assembly.
