Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced during a press conference that the government will assume management of the Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA), but this does not imply that the state will remain its permanent operator.
“At this stage, we must and will take over ENA’s management. However, we have never said that after the nationalization or acquisition process, the state itself would always be the one managing ENA,” Pashinyan stated.
He said that the issue surrounding ENA did not arise suddenly. Complaints and concerns began surfacing during his regional visits and interactions with citizens, according to him.
The Prime Minister stressed the need “to identify an effective manager and to establish clear and efficient public and state oversight over the company's management.”
Pashinyan criticized ENA’s previous management, stating that despite repeated government requests and appeals, it failed to take appropriate measures. Therefore, he said, it is now the government's responsibility to act accordingly.
On July 3, the National Assembly passed several legislative packages in their second and final reading, granting the state tools to intervene in ENA’s management. The President of Armenia has signed the laws enabling the company’s nationalization.
