Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed satisfaction at the July 10 negotiations in Abu Dhabi with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, saying the discussions “can have positive results.” He added that he does not want the Abu Dhabi meeting to become fetishized or demeaned, according to Armenpress.
“I realized today that Abu Dhabi was the first time both sides discussed in advance, agreed to meet and talk. We spoke in Tirana, but that received negative press, even though I initiated it. It turned out there was interest to continue this in more detail. I said ‘let’s agree, agree we did, and we met,’” Pashinyan said.
Asked who chose Abu Dhabi as the venue, the PM said that during calls and a message from the UAE president’s envoy, the UAE expressed willingness—without mediating—to host a platform if Armenia and Azerbaijan needed one.
“I want to thank the UAE president for organizing this at a high level. In Abu Dhabi there was a positive conversation that can yield positive results. What results? I don’t think it’s right to discuss them now. If there are positive outcomes, you will see.
It’s not that we made ironclad agreements—there were ideas. It turned out some of these ideas are positively viewed by both sides. Now either side might, in five days, think they’re not so positive or reconsider them favorably. It wasn’t a rigid deal but a certain understanding. I hope we will continue our conversation in this format, in Abu Dhabi or elsewhere,” Pashinyan said.
On July 10 Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and President Ilham Aliyev met in Abu Dhabi and discussed various aspects of normalizing Armenia–Azerbaijan inter‑state relations. The sides confirmed that bilateral talks are the most effective format to address all issues in the normalization process, and they agreed to continue such dialogue. The meeting lasted five hours.
