Armenian MP from the Hayastan faction and ARF Bureau member Ishkhan Saghatelyan stated that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has effectively confirmed his agreement to grant a corridor through Syunik to Azerbaijan. In a Facebook post, Saghatelyan responded to Pashinyan’s recent press conference, asserting that the names of supposed "American" and "European" companies involved in the project are mere bait to obscure the fact that the primary beneficiaries are Turkey and Azerbaijan.
Saghatelyan emphasized that the pressure being exerted on the Armenian Apostolic Church, philanthropists, the ARF, and opposition figures stems not from domestic political motives, but from new arrangements made with Turkey and Azerbaijan. According to him, this reflects another national concession disguised within the framework of the so-called "Zangezur Corridor" initiative.
“Today, Nikol Pashinyan openly revealed the true reason behind the new wave of repression targeting the Armenian Apostolic Church, benefactors, the ARF, and other opposition figures. These pressures are not solely domestic political maneuvers but are driven by new agreements with Turkey and Azerbaijan.
At the root of this authoritarian behavior lies another concession—this time regarding Syunik in the form of the ‘Zangezur Corridor.’
Today, Pashinyan effectively confirmed his consent to provide a corridor through Syunik to Azerbaijan—something previously denied.
This corridor would operate with limited Armenian sovereignty and jurisdiction. It aligns with Erdoğan’s vision of a ‘more flexible approach.’
It is the result of emboldened steps encouraged by Macron and the West.
A corridor for the Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem, another concession with nothing in return.
But this is not merely a domestic Armenian issue—it is a geopolitical one. It marks the beginning of a new crisis for the entire region, not just Armenia.
I must underscore that this plan contradicts not only Armenia’s national interests but also the regional stability goals shared by Armenia’s international partners.
By inviting extra-regional forces into the area, Nikol’s regime is not ensuring peace and stability but paving the way for new cycles of violence and instability with unpredictable consequences.
It is now abundantly clear that the talk of ‘American’ and ‘European’ companies is just bait to mask the fact that the main beneficiaries of the project are Turkey and Azerbaijan,” Saghatelyan wrote.
He added that Armenia’s true allies are now directly experiencing the negative consequences of Azerbaijan’s control over Nagorno-Karabakh.
“The involvement of extra-regional forces in Syunik will only worsen the situation.
Let me be clear: regardless of the repression, imprisonments, or smear campaigns we face, we will resist this plan to Turkify Armenia. We will do this alongside our people, who understand the danger of this agenda.
We will do everything in our power to thwart the plan to turn Armenia into a Turkish vilayet,” the post concludes.
