Meghri route plan also targets Iran, MP says

MP Tigran Abrahamyan from the I Have Honor faction stated on Facebook that the true aim of the regional unblocking initiative is to push Russia out of the South Caucasus, and that the Meghri transit route has an anti-Iran orientation.

“When the concept of a corridor entered the foreign policy agenda, 3–4 routes were under discussion. The Meghri option is also anti-Iranian in nature, with Israel and the U.S. as key stakeholders,” he wrote.

Abrahamyan emphasized that the broader geopolitical context involves efforts to exclude Russia from the region, and that this Russia-West standoff is also manifesting within Armenia.

According to him, the Armenian authorities are misrepresenting the issue by claiming that critics of the initiative are merely concerned about whether the corridor will be controlled by Russia or the U.S.

“Regardless of viewpoints, the real issue is not choosing between geopolitical powers, but about Armenia’s sovereignty and jurisdiction,” Abrahamyan noted. “The U.S. is a friendly country, and Russia is an ally. The problem is not with them but with the Armenian government’s lack of principles and its service to foreign interests.”

In a press conference, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed regional connectivity unblocking, saying various options are being discussed with Azerbaijan to simplify transit. However, no agreements or signed documents exist yet. He added that delegation of control to other entities is already happening in Armenia, with mixed results.
