Public debate follows Aznavour statue unveiling in Yerevan

A statue of the legendary artist, chansonnier, and National Hero of Armenia Charles Aznavour was unveiled in Charles Aznavour Square in Yerevan, in front of the Moscow Cinema. The sculpture was created by sculptor Davit Minasyan over the course of a year and a half.

Minasyan acknowledged both criticism and praise surrounding the statue.

“It’s normal and natural. When there are differing opinions, it brings things to life—it means something worked,” he said, according to Panorama.am .

He explained that creating a sculpture is a lengthy process. “Aznavour is shown performing ‘La Bohème’. He’s in the air, with hands of the audience below lifting him up. I deliberately made the statue without a pedestal,” said Minasyan.

He also added that during this year-and-a-half journey, “I personally came to know Aznavour.”

The statue was cast in Gyumri. Its installation was initiated and fully funded by the Yerevan Municipality.

Aznavour’s son, Nicolas Aznavour—founder and chairman of the board of the Aznavour Foundation—spoke at the unveiling ceremony, sharing stories about his father’s deep connection to Armenia.
