French envoy: Syunik is Armenia’s sovereign territory

French Ambassador Olivier Decottignies reacted to a video published by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty about the so-called “Zangezur corridor,” stating that the region is Syunik and is part of Armenia’s sovereign territory. He posted this response on X.

“This is Syunik, sir, and it is sovereign Armenian territory. Understand that,” he wrote.

The video, shared by RFE/RL on X, was titled: “Iran fears it, Turkey dreams of it, the U.S. wants a piece of it. Welcome to Zangezur.”

During a recent international media forum, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev expanded on the so-called “Zangezur corridor” concept, stating that “Azerbaijani cargo and citizens should not meet Armenian border guards or anyone else,” describing the route as an unrestricted and secure connection between Azerbaijani territories. He claimed this was discussed during a meeting with the Armenian Prime Minister in Abu Dhabi. He also declared there would be no “operator, lease, or rental” on Azerbaijani soil.

In response, Armenian Prime Minister’s spokesperson Nazeli Baghdasaryan emphasized that Armenia has never discussed, is not discussing, and will not discuss “the terminology and logic suggested by the President of Azerbaijan.” She added that Aliyev’s statement about avoiding Armenian border guards is inconsistent with the framework of existing discussions.
