The attorney of Armen Ashotyan, Vice President of the Republican Party of Armenia, claims police have failed to comply with a court order allowing his client to visit a dentist while under house arrest. According to lawyer Tigran Atanesyan, this inaction constitutes mistreatment.
Atanesyan emphasized that individuals under house arrest—like all citizens, including prisoners—are entitled to proper medical care. He told reporters after a court hearing that the police have effectively refused to fulfill the escort duty, making the situation inhumane.
"This isn't about emergencies but ongoing issues. There's no functioning mechanism or state body in charge. The court directs the police, and the police simply don’t respond. In effect, the police have declined to act, turning house arrest into a form of torture," he said.
The attorney also noted that in similar cases under the same judge's supervision, detention terms have been replaced with administrative oversight. However, he argued, Ashotyan's case lacks the same flexibility due to its political nature.
In June, the Anti-Corruption Court extended Ashotyan’s house arrest by another two months. He is accused of abuse of power and money laundering related to alleged misconduct at the Yerevan State Medical University named after Mkhitar Heratsi.
