The Armenian court has delivered a verdict in the case of Sona Mnatsakanyan, the pregnant woman who died in 2022 after being struck by a vehicle from the prime minister’s motorcade.
Aram Navasardyan, the defendant, was found guilty. The court decided to leave unchanged the existing preventive measure barring him from leaving the country, according to Aysor.am .
During the trial, Navasardyan’s lawyer requested an acquittal, arguing that the charges lacked sufficient grounds, reports Auroranews.am. However, the prosecutor insisted that the evidence confirmed the defendant’s guilt and urged Navasardyan to apologize to the victim’s family.
Judge Karen Farhoyan presided over the case.
Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed the incident during a press conference, responding to questions about why no one had been held accountable. He stated that he was not responsible for the fatal accident, emphasizing that the vehicle involved was not part of his personal convoy but rather a government-assigned transport.
“This is not my motorcade. It’s the ‘bus of the Prime Minister of Armenia,’ an institution tasked with ensuring the prime minister’s security. That is public transportation allocated to me. There are protocols for managing such movement—what does this have to do with me?” he said.
