Sharp rise in trafficking crimes reported across Armenia

Forced or compulsory labor and sexual exploitation remain the most prevalent forms of trafficking in Armenia, according to Tigran Kirakosyan, a representative of the Investigative Committee, who spoke at a press briefing.

He presented data indicating a notable rise in trafficking cases over the past five years, as reported by Radar Armenia.

“In 2020, there were 10 registered trafficking cases nationwide, with only 1 related to sexual exploitation. In 2021, 16 criminal cases were initiated—7 related to labor exploitation and 9 to sexual exploitation. In 2022, there were 8 cases, equally divided between labor and sexual exploitation.

In 2023, 27 criminal cases were initiated—4 for sexual exploitation and 23 for labor exploitation.

In 2024, 38 cases have been opened so far, including 20 for sexual exploitation and 18 for labor exploitation. In the first half of 2025, 22 cases have been initiated, 15 involving sexual exploitation and 7 involving labor exploitation,” Kirakosyan said.
