The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) last met with the 23 Armenian detainees held in Azerbaijan in June of this year. This was also the most recent time the prisoners had contact with their families, according to Zara Amatuni, head of communications programs for the ICRC delegation in Armenia.
It remains uncertain when the next visit will take place, reports Sputnik Armenia.
“At the moment, there is no confirmation regarding a follow-up visit, due to ongoing challenges related to the continued operation of the ICRC office in Azerbaijan,” said Amatuni.
Commenting on Baku’s statement about its intent to close the ICRC's representation in Azerbaijan, Amatuni noted that while the office has not yet been shut down, it is on the verge of closure. She added that the ICRC continues negotiations with Azerbaijani authorities on humanitarian issues, including the visitation rights to individuals in detention.
According to official data, 23 Armenian captives are currently held in Baku. Five of them were taken prisoner in 2020, and the remaining ones in 2023.
