Yerevan ranks in top 5 ‘pink cities’ by Le Figaro

French daily Le Figaro has named Yerevan one of the world’s five “pink” cities in a feature that highlights its distinctive pink-hued buildings and the color harmony of Republic Square, Armenpress reports.

According to the article, the other cities featured include three in France—Toulouse, Albi, and Montauban—and Jaipur in India.

“To see life through rose-colored glasses, you don’t need love letters—visiting these cities is enough to feel the joy of this color,” the article states.

The piece draws attention to the pink tuff stone buildings and the chromatic harmony of Armenia’s Republic Square.

“Though Yerevan is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world—founded in 782 BC, before Rome—it earned the title ‘Pink City’ only recently. The name emerged in the 20th century during Soviet-era reconstruction. Architect Alexander Tamanyan, tasked with redesigning the city in the 1920s and 1930s, aimed to symbolize urban harmony by using this stone (pink tuff) widely in boulevards and central squares,” the article explains.
