A peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan could be announced during an August 8 meeting at the White House hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a senior official quoted by The Washington Post. The official, who requested anonymity, did not specify whether a formal document would be signed or if it would be a verbal declaration.
Trump is set to receive Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Washington. While details remain unclear, the meeting “could mark a significant milestone in peace negotiations between the two countries.”
It is still uncertain whether the announcement will involve the actual signing of the agreement that was finalized in March, or merely an expression of intent to sign.
During his presidential campaign, Trump had strongly criticized his opponent Kamala Harris on his Truth Social platform, accusing her of “doing nothing during the horrific persecution and forced displacement of 120,000 Armenian Christians from Artsakh.” He had pledged to “end the violence and ethnic cleansing” and declared, “We will restore peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”
Reports of the upcoming meeting emerged earlier this week in Azerbaijani media, which suggested that both Baku and Yerevan were ready to declare their intent to finalize a peace deal.
