Armenian, EU officials highlight economic ties and visa talks

Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan and the Head of the European Union Delegation, Ambassador Vassilis Maragos, discussed the current agenda of Armenia-EU cooperation, also reviewing the implementation of agreements reached during Grigoryan’s visit to Brussels and Luxembourg from July 15 to 17.

They exchanged views on regional developments, underscoring the importance of unblocking regional communications and diversifying economic ties for sustainable development in the region.

Grigoryan and Maragos also addressed the status of negotiations and ongoing work related to the liberalization of visa requirements for Armenian citizens traveling to the European Union.

During an international media forum, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev reiterated his “Zangezur corridor” narrative, stating that “Azerbaijani cargo and citizens should not encounter Armenian border services or anyone else,” describing the route as an unrestricted and secure link between Azerbaijani territories. He claimed this issue was raised during his meeting with the Armenian Prime Minister in Abu Dhabi. He also insisted that “there will be no operator, lease, or rental” on Azerbaijani territory.

Commenting on these statements, Armenian Prime Minister’s spokesperson Nazeli Baghdasaryan emphasized that Armenia “has never discussed, is not discussing, and will not discuss the terminology used by the President of Azerbaijan or the logic that follows from it.” She also said Aliyev’s claim that Azerbaijanis should not encounter Armenian border guards is “detached from the actual logic of the discussions that have taken place.”
