Armenian political analyst and expert in Azerbaijani affairs, Anzhela Elibegova, commenting on the Washington meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, as well as the documents signed there, said the content is unilaterally advantageous to Azerbaijan.
“Azerbaijan got what it wanted, Armenia got another scrap of paper,” she wrote on Facebook.
According to Elibegova:
- “Azerbaijan received unobstructed transit through Armenian territory; Armenia got nothing in return through Azerbaijan’s territory.
- Azerbaijan secured the lifting of U.S. restrictions on military assistance; Armenia received no guarantees on the return of captives.
- Azerbaijan achieved the dissolution of the Minsk Group; Armenia got no guarantees for the return of displaced Karabakh Armenians to their homes.
Azerbaijan got what it wanted, Armenia got another scrap of paper, which Baku won’t even need to violate like the November 9 document, because there are no pro-Armenian provisions to break.”
She added that the ruling Civil Contract party’s emotional toasts about “we will win” are exactly about such situations. “The scariest moment is when everyone starts talking about peace in unison—that’s when you know we’re in trouble,” Elibegova wrote.
On August 8, during the trilateral meeting at the White House between Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, a joint declaration was signed summarizing the results of the Washington talks. In Washington, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in the presence of the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the U.S., also initialed the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
