Prosecutor General insists Karapetyan’s detention lawful

Armenia’s Prosecutor General’s Office has stated that the detention of Samvel Karapetyan is lawful, despite the Criminal Court of Appeals ruling that his arrest was unlawful. The Office announced it will file a cassation appeal against the court’s decision, Armenpress reports.

Prosecutors claim that the appeals court’s finding regarding the unlawfulness of Karapetyan’s arrest is “unrelated to the legality and validity of the court decision applying custody as a preventive measure.”

According to the statement, Karapetyan was released following the arrest deemed unlawful by the appeals court, but was later detained on different grounds. This subsequent detention was recognized as lawful both by the court decision ordering custody and by the ruling issued after its appeal.

The Criminal Court of Appeals has ruled that Samvel Karapetyan’s initial arrest was unlawful.
