Yerevan, Tehran agree to maintain ongoing dialogue

Armenia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan visited Tehran on August 12–13, where he held meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Advisor to the Supreme Leader and head of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations Kamal Kharazi, senior international affairs advisor Ali Akbar Velayati, and Political Advisor to the President of Iran Mehdi Sanaei, according to the Armenian Foreign Ministry.

During these discussions, Kostanyan emphasized Armenia’s appreciation for Iran’s consistent and public stance on respecting Armenia’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and the inviolability of its borders. He reaffirmed that “Armenia, in turn, takes into account Iran’s vital interests.”

Kostanyan expressed gratitude for Iran’s congratulations and support regarding the preliminary signing of the agreement “On the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan,” and the recent progress toward normalizing relations and promoting peace in the region.

Addressing the joint declaration signed on August 8 in Washington by the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the U.S., Kostanyan underlined that the unblocking of regional economic infrastructure must fully respect the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, jurisdiction, and reciprocity — in line with the letter and spirit of the said declaration. In a constructive atmosphere, both sides exchanged views on their respective positions and agreed to maintain continuous dialogue.

The meetings also touched on upcoming high-level engagements.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to arrive in Yerevan on an official two-day visit on August 18.
