Samvel Karapetyan, a businessman residing in Russia, has had his detention extended for another two months, according to his legal team.
The Anti-Corruption Court session lasted several hours before Judge Tigran Davtyan issued the decision.
«Today’s irrational verdict by the Anti-Corruption Court proves that there is no justice in Armenia. But we are determined to restore it. Judges will be free to carry out their professional duties without fear and guided solely by the law,» reads a statement issued by Karapetyan’s defense council.
Karapetyan was initially arrested on June 18 for a two-month term. He faces charges of publicly calling for “the violent overthrow of the constitutional order and the usurpation of power.” He has denied all allegations, while his lawyers argue the case lacks a legal foundation.
Although the Criminal Court of Appeals later ruled his initial arrest unlawful, the Investigative Committee reports that a new criminal case has been launched under Article 422, Part 2 of Armenia’s Criminal Code. The charges stem from public statements Karapetyan made during a media interview, which allegedly called for seizing government powers through unconstitutional means.
