Pashinyan hails peace with Azerbaijan, outlines next steps

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan congratulated members of the executive on the establishment of peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, following the signing of a joint declaration in Washington on August 8.

“I want to congratulate you all on the occasion of establishing peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which took place as a result of the declaration signed on August 8 in Washington. I must note that this does not conclude our work—on the contrary, it begins,” Pashinyan said at a Cabinet meeting, adding that resolving one issue always brings forward new challenges requiring solutions.

According to Pashinyan, this milestone opens new horizons for development and demands heightened efficiency at this stage.

He expressed gratitude to executive members for “their efforts, for interrupting their vacations, and for participating in discussions, consultations, and in-depth analysis of the text.”

“We did not publicize it, but we held a series of consultations and discussions—including with the full Cabinet, the expanded Security Council, the President of the Republic, our parliamentary colleagues, and the Civil Contract parliamentary faction—before heading to Washington. We analyzed the text and concluded that this step had to be taken. I thank you all for your work,” he said, as quoted by Pastinfo.

Pashinyan also called for stronger public communication, emphasizing the need for citizens to fully understand the motivations and outcomes behind government actions.

“Our citizens should understand what we are doing, why we are doing it, what is working and what isn’t, and what the reasons are,” he said.

On August 8, at a trilateral meeting held at the White House, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a joint declaration reflecting the outcome of the Washington talks.

Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also initialed an agreement titled “On the establishment of peace and interstate relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan” in the presence of the three leaders.
