Opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has warned about the dangerous implications of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s recent statements, calling them incompatible with the peace process.
“While Armenian leaders are celebrating a supposed peace deal, Aliyev, speaking from the occupied Karvachar region, responds that the unpredictable global situation forces Azerbaijan to prepare for war,” Abrahamyan said.
He noted that Aliyev has emphasized continued large-scale military procurement, modernization of existing arms, and expansion of special forces.
“This, while Prime Minister Pashinyan on the same day claimed the war is over and even hinted there's no need to increase the military budget,” he added.
However, Abrahamyan stressed that the most troubling and unacceptable part was Aliyev insulting the Armenian people while appearing to negotiate peace with Pashinyan.
“After mocking and insulting the Armenian leadership on numerous occasions, Aliyev has now labeled the Armenian society a ‘sick society’. This clearly reflects the real sentiments and intentions of Azerbaijan’s leadership,” Abrahamyan said.
Earlier, Aliyev had stated that Azerbaijan supports peace but must remain vigilant and ready for military scenarios due to the unpredictability of global developments.
“We don’t want war. We want peace, but we must be ready for war at any time,” Aliyev said.
