GOVERNMENT’S INITIATIVE ON RESTRICTION OF ADS OF TOBACCO GOODS AND STRONG DRINKS MIGHT ADVERSELY AFFECT ARMENIAN INDEPENDENT MEDIA

Today Armenia’s government has approved the bill on the amendments in the law on publicity. The executive power suggests the lawmakers to adopt amendments restricting the advertising of strong drinks and tobacco goods in the media. If the parliament approves the initiative of the government, the advertising of cigarettes in Internet media will be prohibited, newspapers will be deprived of the right to advertise tobacco goods on top pages, billboards of nicotine will not be placed near the educational institutions. Spirits with over 20% of alcohol strength will be banned to be advertised on television. According to experts, the adoption of the suggested amendments will adversely affect Armenian independent media. And what is more, the restriction on advertising of alcohol and tobacco might result in financial collapse of several TV channels as it is known that exactly the producers of cigarettes and strong drinks are the most solvent advertising accounts nowadays.
