RA parliament committee backs ILO convention ratification

The Standing Committee on Labor and Social Affairs of Armenia’s National Assembly has approved the draft law on ratifying the International Labour Organization’s Convention No. 190 on Violence and Harassment. The draft was presented by Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Ruben Sargsyan.

Convention 190 protects workers and other persons, regardless of contractual status. It also covers trainees, interns, apprentices, dismissed workers, volunteers, job seekers, and applicants.

The convention applies to those exercising the authority, duties, or responsibilities of an employer. It defines the term “violence and harassment” at work and sets out member states’ actions to prevent and eliminate such conduct.

According to the deputy minister, the convention applies to both the private and public sectors, in formal and informal economies. It addresses violence and harassment occurring in the course of work, related to work, or arising from it.

The convention was adopted on June 21, 2019, and has so far been ratified by 50 countries.

The deputy minister also answered questions from lawmakers and provided clarifications.
