Poll shows 55% doubt peace declaration with Azerbaijan

Aram Navasardyan, director of MPG LLC, a full member of the GALLUP International Association in Armenia, presented the results of a nationwide poll conducted by phone between August 25–30, Panorama.am reported.

According to the findings, 55% of respondents said they do not believe the signed declaration will ensure lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

When asked about their evaluation of the August 8 declaration signed in Washington:

  • 22.8% gave an absolutely positive assessment,
  • 19.3% somewhat positive,
  • 13.6% moderately negative,
  • more than 34% expressed an overall negative view.

Meanwhile, 7% said they found it difficult to answer, and 3.3% were not aware of the declaration at all.

The survey included 1,101 citizens.

Additionally, 60% of respondents reacted negatively to the idea of granting Azerbaijan a transit route through Armenia’s Syunik region.

On August 8 at the White House, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a joint Washington Declaration following their trilateral talks. In the presence of the leaders, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov initialed the “Agreement on Establishing Peace and Interstate Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”
