Andranik Chamichyan placed under house arrest

The pre-trial detention measure for 18-year-old Andranik Chamichyan, a member of the Armenian Youth Union of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF), has been changed following the July 10 searches in homes of ARF members.

According to human rights defender Ruben Melikyan, Judge Lusine Alaverdyan has decided to place Chamichyan under house arrest, Aysor.am reports.

“Andranik will remain under house arrest for two months. He is prohibited from communicating with anyone,” Melikyan stated.

An investigative motion had been submitted earlier to extend his detention in prison.

Chamichyan was originally detained for two months over possession of airsoft game equipment. He is accused of preparing terrorist acts. On the morning of July 10, Armenian law enforcement carried out searches at the homes of ARF members, detaining seven individuals who were later taken to the Investigative Committee. Most of them were released within days.
