Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan announced in parliament that discussions are underway with the United States on a possible joint railway project in Armenia.
"Today, our work with the American side has intensified to better understand issues related to a potential U.S.-Armenia joint railway project in Armenia, along with other infrastructure matters. There are technical parameters that need to be negotiated," said Mirzoyan, according to Sputnik Armenia.
The minister emphasized that Armenia’s primary interest lies in swiftly implementing the process and achieving unblocking.
"Don’t forget, Armenia has been under blockade for over 30 years, and first and foremost, we are the ones who need the unblocking. We are gaining opportunities based on our declared principles," he added.
On July 16, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that regional transport unblocking must respect all countries’ territorial integrity and sovereignty. He did not rule out that management of a route from Azerbaijan to Nakhichevan through Syunik might be delegated to a private company. Pashinyan also said the U.S. and EU had expressed interest in such an arrangement.
Later, the ruling Civil Contract faction announced that Armenia had abandoned the idea of leasing the Syunik road.
