Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan said Armenia is not discussing the withdrawal of Russia’s 102nd military base from Gyumri, calling the issue off the agenda.
Speaking to reporters, Simonyan was asked about the possibility of removing the Russian military base in Gyumri. “We have not had such discussions, I cannot say anything new on this topic,” he told Aysor.am .
When asked whether the Armenian-Russian joint air defense system is currently functioning, Simonyan replied that he has no information on the matter.
Russia’s 102nd base in Gyumri was established in 1995 and operates under the CIS Joint Air Defense System. It is staffed by about 1,000 personnel under Russia’s North Caucasus Military District and equipped with S-300 missile systems and MiG-29 fighters. In 2011, the agreement on its presence in Armenia was extended until 2044.
