Ashotyan: Minsk Group’s closure is not the end

Republican Party of Armenia deputy chair Armen Ashotyan said a new international format for resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh issue may emerge after a government change.

Writing on Facebook, Ashotyan argued that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s “treacherous steps” led to the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group, which he described as a blow to international opportunities for settlement. Still, he said this situation could be corrected with targeted policies under a new government.

Ashotyan reminded that the Swiss parliament had already created a mechanism — the Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno-Karabakh, established in March, which, although with a weaker and more limited mandate, institutionalizes the issue in international platforms. He urged both Artsakh’s parliament and Armenian political and civic forces to make maximum use of this forum.

“Do not forget about it, and work effectively with this platform,” he wrote.

Earlier, Pashinyan told parliament he saw no benefit in the Minsk Group’s work. On August 8, Armenia and Azerbaijan submitted a joint request in Washington to dissolve the group, a process expected to be completed by year’s end.
