Netherlands pledges €14 million for housing Artsakh refugees

The Netherlands has announced it will allocate €14 million to support the provision of affordable housing for refugees displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh.

Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel shared the news on X account, stating that the funds will be disbursed via the Global Concessional Financing Facility (GCFF). This initiative aims to help refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh settle in Armenia by ensuring they have access to affordable housing.

Van Weel also noted that the Dutch government was pleased to welcome Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in The Hague, reaffirming the strong ties between the two countries, according to a report by Factor.am .

“We highly value Armenia’s efforts to promote peace and stability in the region,” Van Weel wrote in a separate post.

This funding follows the events of September 2023, when Azerbaijan launched a large-scale military offensive against Nagorno-Karabakh on the 19th of that month. Following intense shelling, the de facto authorities of the Republic of Artsakh agreed to a ceasefire on September 20, accepting Baku’s terms, which included the disarmament of local forces and the dissolution of the self-declared republic.

The mass exodus of ethnic Armenians began on September 24, with over 100,000 forcibly displaced to Armenia. Reports indicate that fewer than 20 ethnic Armenians remain in Nagorno-Karabakh. On September 28, Artsakh’s president Samvel Shahramanyan signed a decree officially dissolving the republic, effective January 1, 2024.
