Pashinyan highlights solar energy as present-day strategy

At a government meeting, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed Armenia’s growing electricity demand and export opportunities, noting that global consumption is rapidly increasing.

“Electricity is becoming one of the most demanded goods worldwide, and we must find ways to export ours. Abundant energy production in Armenia should also attract investment,” he said, as quoted by Panorama.am.

The Prime Minister emphasized that modern technologies such as artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies consume unprecedented amounts of energy, which Armenia could leverage to attract new investments.

“We must not slow down or halt solar energy development. It should move forward, and we must catch up with it using our technologies and solutions,” Pashinyan said, stressing that renewable energy is not just a future perspective but a strategic step for today.

Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Davit Khudatyan informed the cabinet that Armenia is exporting electricity to Georgia and Iran. “At certain hours of the day, when solar plants produce significant volumes, we have to supply all our capacities into the grid, beyond the nuclear plant’s output,” he said.

Responding, Pashinyan welcomed this as positive: “You say unfortunately, because it brings you difficulties. I say fortunately, because with our own resources we fully cover domestic needs. Do you realize what strategic issue we’ve solved? Without fanfare, without ribbon cuttings, without speeches, we’ve created the equivalent of two nuclear plants.”

The Prime Minister proposed holding further discussions on renewable energy development.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Territorial Administration earlier confirmed that the state-subsidized solar panel program ended on July 1, 2025, and will not be renewed, as the sector’s rapid expansion had caused challenges in the energy system. Under the program, households could install solar systems with subsidies, starting from 0% interest rates and up to a 10 million AMD limit.
