Armenia will continue deepening its cooperation with the European Union, said Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan during a joint press conference with European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kosy. He stated that in recent years, Armenia-EU relations have reached a new level of depth and quality, now encompassing political and security dialogue.
“I am hopeful that our new agenda will be approved at the Armenia-EU Partnership Council meeting to be held in Brussels later this year. I am confident this process will further deepen our relations and contribute to the advancement of democratic and economic reforms in Armenia,” said Grigoryan, according to 1lurer.am .
He added that Armenia will continue consistent efforts to fully implement the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA). He emphasized the importance of adapting the EU’s leading practices as a key element of the reform process.
“I would like to stress that the Armenian Government highly values the EU’s continued support. The EU is a reliable partner in strengthening Armenia’s socio-economic resilience, institutional reforms, and regional stability. Armenia remains committed to the regional connectivity agenda,” he said.
On March 26, Armenia’s National Assembly passed a bill in its second and final reading to initiate the EU accession process. The Armenian Government approved the draft proposal, submitted by the civil initiative Eurovote, on January 9. However, the EU has yet to issue an official invitation for membership, and opposition forces in Armenia have called the law legally absurd. The President of Armenia signed the bill into law.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk also stated that Armenia “cannot sit on two chairs” and will have to choose between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the EU.
