Pashinyan: no border casualties for 1 year 7 months

At the 7th congress of the Civil Contract party, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that for one year and seven months, no Armenian soldier has been killed or wounded due to border shootings with Azerbaijan, Armenpress reports.

He emphasized that this marks an entirely new context for the congress. According to Pashinyan, Armenia has entered a new stage in its history thanks to the establishment of peace with Azerbaijan.

“This peace was formally secured on August 8 in Washington, in the presence and with the support of U.S. President Donald Trump, through the declaration signed by myself and the president of Azerbaijan. But August 8 was only the culmination of a long process. For 19 months, not a single soldier has been killed or injured in border shootings. Since independence, Armenia has never before had such a period,” Pashinyan said.

He added that the key challenge now is to ensure that this 19-month period extends further to two years, three years, a hundred, even two hundred years, and that this trend applies along all Armenian borders.

Pashinyan recalled that before the party’s 6th congress, he had said that if the government managed to maintain the state’s existence for two or three years, it would endure for centuries.

“Three years later, I stand before you as Prime Minister of Armenia, at the ruling party’s congress, at a time when for 19 months no soldier has been killed or wounded by border fire. The agreement on peace and interstate relations with Azerbaijan has been initialed,” Pashinyan declared, congratulating the Armenian people.

On August 8 at the White House, Prime Minister Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a joint declaration following their trilateral meeting. At the same time, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in the presence of the leaders, initialed the agreement on establishing peace and interstate relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
