Armenian, Spanish parliament speakers discuss TRIPP initiative

During his working visit to Spain, Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan met with Pedro Rollán, President of the Spanish Senate. Alongside strengthening interparliamentary relations, the talks centered on Armenia–EU relations, ongoing democratic reforms in Armenia, and the EU monitoring mission deployed in the country.

Special attention was given to the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) program.

The Senate President emphasized the importance of the agreements reached in Washington on August 8, noting that Spain expects the eventual signing of a peace treaty. He added that peace has no alternative.

Simonyan, for his part, drew attention to the issue of Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan, as well as the ongoing problem of missing persons.

In Washington, Armenian, Azerbaijani, and U.S. leaders — Nikol Pashinyan, Ilham Aliyev, and Donald Trump — officially agreed to launch the TRIPP corridor. Trump said the route would allow Azerbaijan to reach Nakhchivan while fully respecting Armenia’s sovereignty. He stressed that Armenia would also gain a special partnership with the U.S. for developing the corridor, with agreements set for up to 99 years, extendable by another 99 years. Trump highlighted major infrastructure developments expected, with U.S. companies eager to invest heavily in the region. On September 11, Pashinyan clarified that Armenia had not leased land to the U.S. for 99 years but granted construction rights instead.
