АNC: Ter-Petrosyan to play key role in 2026 elections

Armenia’s first President, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, will play a serious role in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7, 2026, according to Levon Zurabyan, Vice President of the Armenian National Congress (ANC). He emphasized that the elections are not viewed as an end in themselves, reports Sputnik Armenia.

“The goal is to create an alternative political force based on a clear programmatic platform, one capable of rallying people and launching a nationwide movement,” Zurabyan said.

Responding to whether the ANC will serve as the core of this movement and participate in the elections, Zurabyan pointed to the party’s historical role—from Armenia’s independence to its continued political involvement.

“Obviously, we all bear responsibility. As the founding president, Ter-Petrosyan is responsible too, especially because successive leaders deviated from his original course toward peace based on strength. Today, Armenia is in a fragile state, having endured heavy defeats and losses. In such conditions, neither the founding president nor his political force can remain indifferent,” Zurabyan noted.

He argued that there is currently no political force with the capacity to build a genuine national movement. While ANC does not aim to monopolize the political arena, it is open to pragmatic and realistic partnerships.

“Cooperation must be grounded in practical political principles—not the illusion of peace that brought the country to its current state, but a real program based on geopolitical balance. That means ensuring stable peace and economic development. This includes building the Yerevan–Meghri railway, expanding digital and road infrastructure, and promoting strong technological initiatives. Without securing leading positions in niche tech sectors, Armenia cannot claim a stable place in the global economic system,” he added.

Zurabyan also stressed the importance of reinforcing democratic institutions, noting that Armenia’s current political trajectory undermines democratic potential.

Parliamentary elections in Armenia are scheduled for June 7, 2026.
