Armenia’s Minister of Environment, Hambardzum Matevosyan, met with European Union Commissioner for Environment, Water, Oceans and Fisheries, Jessica Roswall, during a series of meetings in New York.
The discussion focused on preparations for the upcoming 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, scheduled to be held in Armenia in October 2026, and explored potential avenues for cooperation.
The two sides emphasized the importance of coordinating conferences and aligning efforts with past COP experiences, as well as fostering synergy through engagement with various international institutions.
Minister Matevosyan stressed the importance of applying effective methodologies and accurate approaches to achieve targeted and tangible outcomes.
They also reviewed the organizational process for COP17, upcoming tasks, and preparatory steps needed to ensure a streamlined and effective event.
Both parties highlighted the need to maintain continuous stakeholder engagement and implement joint awareness campaigns, which would significantly enhance public involvement and understanding.
The Minister reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to continued close cooperation in promoting sustainability, implementing effective environmental policies, and tackling climate challenges.
The 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity is scheduled to take place in Armenia from October 18 to 30, 2026.
