Armenia names roads on its sovereign land, MP says

Civil Contract faction member Artur Hovhannisyan called on Azerbaijani officials to align their public rhetoric with the terminology and commitments outlined in signed agreements, particularly following the Armenia–Azerbaijan–U.S. summit, where the TRIPP transport route was officially announced.

“Armenia determines the names of places and roads on its sovereign territory, just as Azerbaijan does in its own,” Hovhannisyan said during a press briefing in the National Assembly, according to Auroranews.am.

He noted that both sides published identical statements following the October 2 meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, confirming that the transport corridor crossing Armenia will be named TRIPP.

“We urge our Azerbaijani counterparts to base their statements strictly on the language and terms found in signed documents. Anything beyond that is not legitimate and does not reflect mutual agreements,” he added.

Hovhannisyan also referred to the parliamentary statement adopted on October 2 regarding the peace process. He said parliament reaffirmed its support for the commitments made in the August 8 declaration, signed by Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States.

He criticized the parliamentary opposition for boycotting the vote on the peace declaration, calling it a failure to back a constructive process.

The TRIPP (Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity) route, agreed upon in Washington, aims to give Azerbaijan access to Nakhichevan while fully respecting Armenia’s sovereignty. U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized that the route represents a long-term partnership, initially leased for 99 years, with the possibility of another 99-year extension. Armenia, however, said that it granted a construction right, not a territorial lease.
