During a court session held on October 6, the public prosecutor and legal representatives of Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan requested that Torgom Asatryan be sentenced to 7 years in prison in the case involving violence against Mirzoyan.
Initially, Asatryan had been charged with attempted murder, allegedly committed on November 9, 2020, the night a ceasefire agreement between Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan was announced. However, the court reclassified the charges under a less severe article—Part 2 of Article 225 of the former Criminal Code.
This article concerns violent participation in mass disturbances, such as assault, rioting, arson, property damage, or the use of firearms, explosives, or armed resistance against authorities.
The October 6 hearing included additional proceedings, with sentencing being one of the central topics.
Following the announcement of the ceasefire agreement late on November 9, 2020, mass unrest erupted across Armenia, particularly in Yerevan at government buildings such as the National Assembly and the Prime Minister's office. That same night, Ararat Mirzoyan, then Speaker of Parliament and now Foreign Minister, was assaulted in the capital.
