Court freezes Serzh Sargsyan’s assets

Judge Aram Grigoryan of Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Court has accepted a claim by the Prosecutor's Office seeking the confiscation of property from former President Serzh Sargsyan, as well as from Aleksan Aleksanyan and Valeri Narimanyan.

According to the ruling, Sargsyan, Narimanyan, and Aleksanyan have been recognized as financially liable parties. To secure the claim, the court has imposed a freeze on their assets, Factor.am reports.

At a previous hearing, the public prosecutor demanded that nearly 4 billion drams worth of property be seized from Serzh Sargsyan.

According to the indictment, between May 20, 2000, and April 4, 2007, while serving as Minister of Defense, Sargsyan exploited his position to transfer state-owned real estate under the Ministry’s balance sheet, particularly properties located on Admiral Isakov Avenue in Yerevan and near the Yerablur Military Pantheon, to associates, subordinates, government officials, and private individuals at prices significantly below market value. The charges state that through this process, he committed 15 counts of embezzlement and 2 counts of misappropriation, causing major financial harm to the state.

Following the launch of the case, both the Prosecutor General’s Office and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stressed in public remarks that plots of land belonging to the Yerablur Military Pantheon were among those privatized. Serzh Sargsyan has denied the charges brought against him.
