Venezuela’s opposition leader wins Nobel Peace Prize

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to María Corina Machado, the leader of Venezuela’s opposition, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced.

According to the official statement, Machado was recognized for her “tireless work defending the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,” BBC reports.

There had been strong speculation that the award might go to U.S. President Donald Trump, due to his claimed role in halting several wars during his presidency, including the peace efforts between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

On September 30, Trump stated in a speech before American generals that if someone else received the prize, “it would be a great insult to the United States.”
