Regional cooperation enters new phase, official says

Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Paruyr Hovhannisyan, stated during the general debate of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly’s 80th session that a new chapter of regional cooperation is opening in the South Caucasus.

He stressed that global disarmament and non-proliferation remain top priorities in Armenia’s foreign policy agenda, according to Armenpress.

Hovhannisyan further emphasized the importance of a strong and effective conventional arms control system, combined with confidence-building and security mechanisms, as essential tools for maintaining both international and regional peace.

He specifically noted that the progress recorded in the joint declaration signed on August 8 in Washington between Armenia and Azerbaijan reaffirmed the belief that a new era of peace, stability, and cooperation is emerging in the South Caucasus.

On August 8, a trilateral meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was held at the White House. A joint declaration was signed summarizing the outcomes of the Washington meeting. In the presence of the leaders, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov preliminarily signed the "Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan."
