Lawyer Ara Zohrabyan confirmed that law enforcement authorities have detained six clergymen, according to Sputnik Armenia’s Telegram channel.
Besides Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan, who heads the Aragatsotn Diocese, the following priests are currently being held at the Yerevan Investigative Committee:
Father Paren
Father Manuk
Father Hayk
Father Mkrtich
Father Gevond
Several civilians have also been detained. Zohrabyan did not specify the legal grounds for the arrests.
Previously, it was reported that Father Paren Araqelyan, pastor of Saghmosavank, was among those arrested.
Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan is the nephew of the Catholicos of All Armenians.
Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that “the Catholicosate will be liberated just as Armenia was freed from Serzh Sargsyan in 2018.”
