Avanesyan: free breast cancer screening for certain social groups

This year, Armenia has launched an expanded screening program under state commission, under which mammographic examinations are conducted free of charge for several social groups, announced Health Minister Anahit Avanesyan during a government session.

“This program allows beneficiaries of the social package, persons with disabilities, and members of certain social groups to receive free mammographic screening. In particular, our teachers, doctors, civil servants, and family members of military personnel can take advantage of this opportunity. Our motto is: ‘one screening can save a life,’” the minister emphasized, Armenpress reports.

Avanesyan noted that breast cancer remains among the most common and fatal diseases both in Armenia and globally.

She added that preventive programs like this can not only reduce mortality rates but also improve overall quality of life.

“Through such preventive campaigns, we can not only lower mortality, but also ensure a higher quality of life. I thank everyone for joining this awareness campaign,” Avanesyan said.

According to the “Health and Healthcare” statistical yearbook, in 2023 Armenia registered 1,511 new cases of breast cancer in life (of which 56 % were detected at stage I–II, 22.5 % at stage III, and 21.5 % at stage IV). By year‑end 2023, the number of patients with breast cancer was 14,632.
